UPDATE: According to King on 1280, Bonoff is out, Ashwin Madia will be the 3rd CD DFL nominated candidate. UPDATE: Michael says: 4:38 P.M.: The rumors are flying around that Bonoff is withdrawing. UPDATE: Madia is getting very close now, 9th (gasp) ballot coming now... UPDATE: Looks like this thing will not budge and will probably not get decided today. Over at MDE, Michael is live blogging over at the 3rd CD convention and the big focus is centered on the race between Ashwin Madia and Terri Bonoff. From what I can read of it, it looks like it might be slightly starting to go Madia's way: 2:55 P.M.: The fifth ballot results: 72 votes or 46.3% for Bonoff, 83.5 votes or 53.7% for Madia. 93 votes are needed for endorsement. Bonoff loss one vote, Madia picked-up one vote. The sixth ballot is it about to begin.
For my money, I see Bonoff as a more beatable candidate, and I had hope for her to win, even though I figured Madia would take it. Some say, "no, just having her as a woman will be the best choice for the western burbs". Sorry, I'm not buying, her gaffes and poor grasp of the big issues will not fly with independent voters in my opinion. Madia seems the much stronger candidate even with less experience than Bonoff. We'll see what the 7th ballot shows...
This sounds like a genuinely fun convention. A healthy and close contest like Bonoff vs. Madia is what makes conventions exciting. Michael also reports that liberal Republican Representative Ron Erhadt showed up and was praised by the DFL chair. Looking to switch parties, Ron? Given your voting record, it would not be a shocker. I'll be attending as a Delegate and working at the 3rd CD Republican convention next weekend and don't anticipate anywhere near the excitement that today's close contest is generating. Erik Paulsen, with his solid record and strong support has no known competition for the 3rd House seat nomination. Heh, I wonder if Ron Erhardt will be there working the room there too?
I just returned from the big tax rally at the Capitol. It was a gas, and we had great attendance even with the dreadful winter (in mid-April) weather. I would love to have seen Ron Erhardt there. There were lots of pictures of him there indicating how much he was "wanted", and I'm sure plenty of Minnesota Republicans in attendance would have loved to have a talk with him.
