There was a still air of tension for conservatives all day about the debate. The was until about the 3rd question when Sarah Palin really turned it on and found her groove. This was a clear win for her tonight, whether or not you want to count the numerous lies by Joe Biden, or if we are to be charitable, comments that he is simply too dumb to realize he had blatantly contradicted previously. I counted 6 while watching, Karl Rove commented later on a post-debate wrap up he counted 10. She faltered and was nervous at the start, I was a bit worried that she would get it together, and although she could have been a whole lot tougher. In a word—blowout But beyond the answers and being right on the principles, she was simply that much more likeable in all ways—from voice, humility, love of country, optimism, simplicity and directness. Sorry Joe, but those streets you say you live on have grown gates and have been filled with 6,000 square foot homes, Simple Scranton Joe just ain't selling 50 years out. But hey, don't believe me, a blunt flag waving conservative. Listen to Frank Luntz' focus group of indies: Oh, I can hear you cynical lefties already, "Luntz is a partisan hack." Sorry, consider Allahpundits' defense of this group: Lest anyone think Luntz cooks these things, his presidential debate FG was basically a wash tilting slightly towards Obama and his FG for C-SPAN shortly after Palin was picked was decidedly chilly towards her. The electoral math is sufficiently unforgiving that I can’t quite believe this is a gamechanger, but clearly she did as well as anyone could have hoped. Clutch.
My final comment in defense of my belief that this was a slam dunk of Palin as winner is my spirits. I was totally ready to have driven home from Dr. Jonz' party tonight with either my head hung low mumbling, "well, she gave it her best shot, but this thing is over." if I though she had lost. OR feeling as I do now that she excelled and took a pelt. No doubt she closed the deal. Mr. McCain - It's your turn. Turn on the heat.
