I'd be the first to admit that I'm no economic guru. I certainly could not offer any useful advice or weigh in on what the best course of action is to solve what may or may not be a financial crisis for America. It's readily apparent that there is plenty of blame to go around for getting us into our current situation. It is certainly less clear what the best course of action is to steady the markets and boost American's confidence in our economy and banking system. While my personal opinion of whom to blame is backed by plenty of evidence of politics as usual points more heavily toward Democrats like Barney Frank, Chuck Schumer, Harry Reid , Chris Dodd and "The One" the Republicans are not entirely guilt free.
Jonah Goldberg has a piece written for the LA Times that points out this very fact. He starts out by quoting John Boehner prior to the failed bailout bill.
On Sunday evening, Republican House Minority Leader John A. Boehner explained his considered opinion on the $700-billion Wall Street bailout plan: It's a "crap sandwich," he said, but he was going to eat it.
As we all know John and the rest of us are still going hungry waiting for something to be served up. It might very well be that nothing at all but letting the free markets sort things out might be just the ticket . But because Bush, the Fed and Congress have been proclaiming that economic meltdown is imminent something is going to have to be done to reduce the fear that not only hits Main Street but can also throw Wall Steet into a selling panic as we saw yesterday. For better or worse Congress is going to have to serve up some kind of sandwich soon, but given that we're putting the solution in the hands of the very people that caused the problem I'm not so sure I'm all that hungry any more. Perhaps Jonah put it best.
I loathe populism. But if there ever has been a moment when reasonable men's hands itch for the pitchfork, this must surely be it. No one is blameless. No one is pure. Two decades of crapulence by the political class has been prologue to the era of coprophagy that is now upon us. It is crap sandwiches for as far as the eye can see.
